My period and I have a love hate relationship. On the one hand, I see a number of benefits to my monthly cycle, while on the other, I dread that time of the month just like every other woman in the world. Although my period is not something I generally look forward to, it’s a friendly reminder that everything is working properly and a great excuse to stuff my face with chocolate. I’m not bothered when that time of the month comes along because I have all the resources necessary to deal with it. But imagine for a second what life would be like if we didn’t have those necessities that we consider commonplace…
Power to the Period
There are around 3.5 million homeless people living in the United States. Of these, a large percentage are women who have their monthly cycles just like we do, but unfortunately, they are so often forced to go without the tools that we use to make dealing with our periods easy. Holly Sanchez recognized the fact that many homeless women are forced to go without items such as tampons and pads because shelters lack these resources and voiced her concern on Twitter urging women to buy an extra box of feminine products to donate. U by Kotex was inspired by Holly’s passion and partnered with DoSomething.org to create this Period Project.
After realizing that women have a lot of ideas about how to make things better when it comes to that time of the month, U by Kotex introduced the Period Projects, a series led by real women who have a passion for change. This Period Project, titled Power to the Period, is the first national period products drive of its kind. By joining the Power to the Period campaign, you’ll have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of so many homeless women in a way that many people never even consider. Together, we can ensure that women in need have access to the sanitary supplies that we so often take for granted.
I love the saying “be the change that you want to see in the world” because the truth of the matter is that change starts with each and every one of us. Join DoSomething.org and U by Kotex to help bring Holly’s vision to light by running a drive for unopened boxed of sanitary supplies in your school or community or by donating them to a local shelter. I love the idea of having a period party with your girls complete with all of your favorite snacks for that time of the month. Have everyone bring a box of unopened pads, tampons, or panty liners to donate and chow down on your go-to goodies whether it’s actually that time of the month or not to be a part of Power to the Period. Be sure to share all about your period party on social media using #PeriodProjects. Interested in getting involved in this amazing campaign? Find out more about Power to the Period here.
