New Years Eve has always been my favorite holiday. As a kid, I made sure my whole family was gathered together and we spent the evening playing games and acting out Disney movies (I would literally assign each person a role and give them lines – it was a big production) before counting down to midnight. As a teenager and college student, I always spent the holiday partying it up with friends after a nice dinner out with my parents. Last year, as a newlywed, my husband and I made a big deal out of our first New Year’s Eve as a married couple. We rung in 2015 at Nobu in Milano then met up with friends and spent the night at a club until the wee hours of the morning before retiring to the suite we had booked for the occasion.
After going back and forth for days about how we would spend my favorite holiday this year, we decided at the last minute on having a quiet holiday for two. We cooked dinner together and feasted on lobster, asparagus, and baked potatoes as we discussed our goals for the coming year. I made homemade Nutella brownies that we enjoyed while we cuddled on the couch watching movies. As midnight approached, we reflected on everything we accomplished in 2015 and how we plan to build on it in the New Year before popping a bottle of Moët to toast to 2016.
It’s funny to me how my idea of fun has evolved over the years. Although I’m sure going into Tokyo for the evening would have been an exciting (and cold and crowded) way to bring in 2016, we had a perfect evening in and there’s no other way I would have rather welcomed a year that I know will be one for the books. In my New Year, Same Me post last week, I explained that in 2016, I want to continue to LiveLifeWell. In honor of my commitment to build on what I started in 2015, I thought it was more than appropriate to wear my “well dressed, well educated, well traveled” t-shirt to my husband’s first game of the year.
