Anyone that knows me knows I live for a vacation. They also know there’s nothing I hate more than a long line. For as long as I can remember, I’ve envied the people who get to skip the long U.S. Customs and Border Protection lines for one reason or another. Whenever I saw people swipe their passports at the Global Entry kiosks, I instantly got jealous at the thought that they would be home in their pajamas catching up on their favorite shows before I would. It was this jealousy, along with the fact that my husband and I spend a lot of time abroad, that inspired me to apply for Global Entry myself. Global Entry allows travelers to skip the paperwork and long processing lines at major U.S. airports to cut their wait time in half. On top of that, it (usually) grants access to TSA Pre-check, as well as expedited entry into some other countries. If you’re not already sold on Global Entry, the fact that the application process is super easy should convince you. Here’s how you can apply for Global Entry in 3 easy steps:
How to Apply for Global Entry in 3 Easy Steps
Head on over to the Global Online Enrollment System (GOES) to create an account. Once your account is up and running, log in, complete the application, and pay the $100 non-refundable application fee.
Customs and Border Protection will then review your application. Be sure to log on and check for updates every week or so! If all goes according to plan, your application will be conditionally approved and you will be prompted to schedule an interview at a Global Entry Enrollment Center.
Attend your scheduled interview with your passport and another form of ID (a driver’s license is fine). Your interviewer will ask you some questions about your travel history and background. Then, if you’re approved, he or she will give you some information about your program and send you on your way. Voila! You can start using your Global Entry status right away.
I’m in Cancun this week and it will be my first time seeing my Global Entry in action! I’m excited to see just how much time it saves me upon my return to the United States. I’m thinking that it is going to be well worth the $100 investment.
