Every love story is beautiful, but ours is my favorite…
The summer before I left for college at the University of Miami, I was both nervous and excited about beginning this new chapter of my life. When an acquaintance told me that she had a friend that was going to the U as well and suggested that I reach out to him, the idea of having at least one friend when I moved to campus that fall didn’t seem half bad. That evening, I searched “DeQuan Jones” on Facebook and absent-mindedly typed some lame message introducing myself and asking if he was as excited about starting college as I was. A few minutes later, I received a response. It simply read “Do u have AIM?” and I thought to myself that this guy clearly didn’t have much personality as I typed my AIM screen name… boy was I wrong! Later that night, I received an instant message from a “mrcandyonchrome” and DJ and I chatted on AIM sporadically throughout the course of the summer. Although I remember telling DJ on numerous occasions that I wasn’t looking to be in a relationship while I was in college and was really just looking for a friend, by the time the end of the summer rolled around, I found myself attracted to this man that I had never even met in person. DJ and I officially met for the first time at the University of Miami’s Atlanta Summer Send Off, an event hosted for all the freshman attending UM from Atlanta. The morning of the send off, I received a message from DJ asking if I was planning to attend. Once I told him I was, he told me that he would save me a seat. I was immediately nervous and excited to meet this mystery guy I had been chatting with all summer and I must have changed my outfit and hair 20 times before heading out the door with my mom. The moment we arrived to the CoCa Cola building and walked into the room, I spotted this tall, chocolate, handsome young man and my heart fluttered. He approached me, introduced himself formally, and told me that he had saved two seats my mom and me at his table. I couldn’t tell you anything that happened at the event, because once DJ turned on his charm and flashed his Colgate smile, I was completely smitten. I felt like I was the only girl in the room. That night after the event and every night afterwards for the rest of the summer, we stayed up until the wee hours of the morning talking about any and everything. Even though we had only met in person once, I felt as if I had known him forever. Although at first I tried to deny it, DJ had me at hello.
The story continues with a whirlwind romance full of all the ups and downs you would expect of a college relationship and culminates with our engagement in Aruba (which my husband planned around the anniversary of my father’s death as a way to honor him) and our wedding day, 2 years ago today. Here’s why you should consider writing your own love story:
Benefits of Writing Your Own Love Story
It reminds you why you fell in love in the first place: Reminiscing about the beginning of your romance gives you a reason to think back to when you first met and fell in love. It’s an awesome way to remember what it was that originally brought your together and inspired you to give love a chance.
It builds a since of pride in your relationship: Every couple has been through ups and downs, and thinking about what you’ve overcome empowers you to face trials and tribulations with confidence. It also reminds you of where you started, how far you’ve come, and where you one day hope to be.
It makes a pretty awesome gift: Today my husband and I celebrated our second wedding anniversary and our story made a sweet gift. Consider writing your love story and having it bound as a present for your significant other. He will appreciate the gesture and love getting to read the story he lived from your point of view.
