Call me immature, but no matter how old I get, I’ll always love a fun board or card game. During our time living in Italy, my husband and I rediscovered our love for games like these and would often host his teammates and their wives or girlfriends for game nights at our place. After we saw how much of a hit it was abroad, we brought our game nights stateside. All of our friends look forward to gathering at the Jones residence on nice summer evenings for good food, strong drinks, and a little friendly competition. During my recent trip to Napa Valley, I decided that it would be the perfect opportunity to host an impromptu game night with my girlfriends. Needless to say, I’ve mastered the art of hosting the perfect adult game night, and I’m sharing my tips to help you put on a fun filled evening for you and your friends.
Bring the booze: The thing that sets an adult game night apart from the game nights we used to have as kids is honestly the drinks! Be sure to have the booze flowing during your adult game night. Some people need a little liquid courage to let their guards down and I guarantee you everyone will have more fun with a drink in hand. During my game night in Napa Valley, it was only right that we drank wine, but a fun mixed drink or hunch punch will also do the trick!
Pick adult games: If you want to host the perfect adult game night, Candyland and Shoots and Ladders won’t do! The best adult game nights feature games that are a little raunchy and just teetering the line of being a bit on the inappropriate side. Codenames: Deep Undercover is an adults-only, mature version of Codenames using the same popular game mechanics, but introduces all-new words, packaging, “by-standers” and art. A new twist is added with the inclusion of blank cards, allowing players to introduce their own words to the game. Codenames (the original game) has been a smash hit since its release, it was most recently nominated for the prestigious Spiel des Jahres and the won the Origins Awards for Game of the Year, Best Family Game and Fan Favorite. This version combines the original gameplay with an adult theme making it perfect for bachelor/bachelorette parties, ladies nights in, or game night at the local bar! When I heard that Codenames: Deep Undercover had been released, I could not wait to play and, although the directions are a little confusing, it made the perfect game for my game night.
Make it co-ed: Although the game night I hosted in Napa Valley was just for my girlfriends and me (since it was a girls-only trip), the best game nights are co-ed! My husband and I love to have his friends and mine over to have good old battles of the sexes. We also love to invite other couples so that we can compete against them. Partnering with your significant other is a great way to increase intimacy and practice your communication skills and games like Codenames: Deep Undercover that require teams are a perfect way to do so.
Plan a rematch: If your friends are as competitive as mine are, planning a rematch is going to be an absolute must! While the competition is friendly and is all in good fun, we all love to win and will brag on social media abut being the adult game night champion until someone else steals the crown. Be sure to plan another adult game night and let your guests know the date and time so that the losers know when they can come back and redeem themselves!
