It seems like a whole lifetime ago that I was preparing to begin my freshman year at the University of Miami and considering all of the possible college majors that I could choose from. I knew I wanted to pick something that I was passionate about and that I could apply to multiple areas of my life, not necessarily just to my future career. I knew that I wanted to pick something that I would enjoy learning about. I knew that I wanted my classes to be hands on and that I wanted my curriculum to involve things that I was already interested in, so I chose public relationships. In the end, I double majored in PR and psychology and decided after undergrad to pursue a career in counseling, but public relationships will always have a special place in my heart. We all use public relations in some way, shape, or form every day and between LiveLifeWell and my foundation, I’m beyond thankful that I learned PR skills that I can utilize for my personal and professional endeavors. I learned 3 important things as a PR major that I think everyone should know.
Spin
In public relations terms, spin, more or less, means to manipulate a situation. Although it usually carries a negative connotation and is not something that PR professionals usually like to be associated with, it is a good skill to have. At the end of the day, learning to spin involves learning to take a situation, whether good or bad, and make it your own. Spinning is the ability to take control of an event and make the public see it the way you want to and while it can be used for evil, it can also definitely be used for good, so I’m glad I learned it as a PR major.
Pitch
One of the most important things I learned as a PR major is how to pitch both media about covering certain stories or events and brands/businesses about why working with a certain client would be in their interest. As a blogger, I get pitched to from time to time by publicists who want me to write about the brands they represent. I’m glad that I know how to “speak their language,” so to speak, so I can determine which campaigns are worth working on. Knowing how to pitch the media has been extremely beneficial for me when it comes to reaching out to various newspapers, magazines, and radio stations about covering my foundation and our events. Knowing how to pitch is also a really important skill for bloggers to have so that we can reach out to potential brands that we are interested in working with as influencers.
Brand
As a PR major (with a marketing minor), I learned how to build a brand. I had a whole course dedicated to building a brand from start to finish. Although at the time I didn’t necessarily recognize how beneficial it would be, I now see that it’s a skill that everyone should know. I’ve used it with LiveLifeWell, with the JetJones Foundation, and with my newfound roles as a future marriage and family therapist. At the end of the day, even if you don’t have a business, blog, or foundation, a personal brand is still worth establishing. Branding is of the utmost important and I’m so glad that I learned about it in undergrad and have been able to apply it in so many areas of my life.
What did you major in during college? What are the leasing you learned during your studies that you’ll always hold with you?
