Back in September, I attended my first barre class. I was just learning how to cope with my anxiety and was looking for a new workout to add to my regimen that would challenge me physically in ways that I wasn’t accustomed to and help with my mental health as well. I found just that at Barre3 Druid Hills. A number of my fitness-enthused friends recommended barre classes to me (after reading about my obsession with spin class) and although I was reluctant at first, after my first session at Barre3, I fell in love.
I’ve been hooked on barre classes for 6 months now and have gotten into a groove of going consistently (on most weeks – some weeks, life just happens). Since I’ve added barre classes to my regimen, I’ve recognized several benefits that make this the perfect workout for women looking to develop lean muscles and improve balance both physically and mentally.
Barre classes make you stronger: It didn’t take many classes for me to realize that barre was making me stronger. At barre3, we focus on a combination of isometric holds, small movements (like literally moving down an inch and up and inch), and large movements. The benefit is that during isometric holds and tiny movements. the muscles are being worked continuously. You also target multiple muscles at once during barre classes and work each muscle group to the point of fatigue (you can tell because you literally shake like crazy). On top of that, barre classes are a full hour of core.
Barre classes are a great way to practice your body-mind connection: Taking classes at barre3 has helped me with my goal of being more mindful. Each exercise requires that you give your body your undivided attention. Being told to take a balance challenge in certain poses or to move small makes you hyperaware of your body in a good way. During the full hour, I’m present, and that’s something I truly value about barre classes. I always leave with a clearer mind – feeling less overwhelmed, more energized, and ready to face my day.
Barre classes are for anyone and break life’s monotony: My mom and I will be hosting a free mother-daughter barre class at Barre3 Druid Hills early next month. When we were trying to determine where we could host our podcast’s first fitness related event, I immediately knew that Barre3 was perfect because these classes are truly for everyone. Barre classes are hard on the muscles while being easy on the joints and the instructors offer modifications for any age or fitness level. It truly is a class where all are welcome and invited to work at their own pace. On top of that, it is always fun! I never know exactly what I’m going to get when I enter the studio and every class is different, which gets participants out of their comfort zones (which we all know is usually a great thing).
Have you ever tried a barre class? If so, what were your thought??
